AustralianFootball.com Celebrating the history of the great Australian game
West Brunswick's inaugural women's team was assigned to Women's Development Division One of the Victorian Amateur Football Association in 2017. The side did well, winning 11 out of 14 matches en route to the minor premiership. They then accounted for St. Mary's Salesian by a bare point in the second semi final to make it through to the flag decider, but there was to be a sting in the tail. When the same two sides fronted up a fortnight later in the grand final the eventual margin of victory was again a single point, but on this occasion it was the Saints who earned bragging rights. For West Brunswick, it was a heart-breaking end to a season of enormous promise.
Sadly, the 2018 season panned out in similar fashion as the Magpies topped the ladder after the home and away rounds before progressing straight to the grand final on the strength of a 2.1 (13) to 0.8 (8) second semi final defeat of their previous season's nemesis St. Mary's Salesian. Just as in 2017 the grand final pitted West Brunswick against the Saints and once again the latter team prevailed, this time by the rather more comfortable margin of 31 points.
